During extreme temps like we are experiencing right now (-17 is crazy cold!) it is not unusual for our furnaces to struggle to keep our homes as toasty warm as we are accustom to. Your furnace is working hard to keep up with the demand. If your home is older and/or lacking proper insulation, this will make it even more challenging.
If you have babies or elderly family members in your home, and you are concerned about them not keeping warm enough, consider the following:
1. Turn on your oven for a little while, and open the door to allow heat to warm up the room.
2. Pick up a cheap space heater at the department store to help keep a bedroom warm, or to warm up a bathroom during bathing time.
3. Keep the curtains drawn at night to help keep cold air from drafting in from older windows.
4. Place a rolled up towel on the floor along the inside of your front and back doors to help keep the cold air from creeping in.
5. Keep crawling babies dressed in warm footie PJ’s layered with socks and t-shirt underneath. The air on the floor is always colder and drafty. If they will wear a skull cap, that would be even better. And, of course, be sure to keep them away from space heaters and ovens with open doors!
Hang in there, it’s suppose to warm up to the 30’s by Friday! But, if you think there is something wrong with your furnace, give a call and we'll send a tech out to take care of it.
