Boiler Service And Repair

Boilers and hot water heating systems are effective since they can warm up large spaces more proficiently and comfortably than other forms of energy.  Manufacturers  recommend a cleaning and check of your heating system and air conditioning equipment to provide efficient performance and longevity.

We specialize in the replacement and retrofitting of boilers and hot water heating systems for residences, apartment buildings, condominiums and commercial structures in the Des Moines area.  Commonly we have found boiler setups that could have had their useful lives stretched for years if the owners had chosen yearly service, cleaning and testing by a trained boiler service professional.
Let us know if you're experiencing any of these issues:  Noisy plumbing, poor heating performance, some radiators aren't giving off heat, there is water leakage throughout the boiler or you notice that the expansion tank or pressure relief valve is leaking water.

Tips To Help You Save Money During The Cold Winter Months

ankeny iowa des moines boilerLowering unneeded energy consumption is a simple method to keep your cash in your wallet. Here are a few ideas you could do yourself, at no expense to you from your friends at Green's Appliance, Heating, and Cooling in Ankeny, Iowa.

Let the sunlight in. Open up draperies and allow the sun to heat up your residence free-of-charge (be sure to have them closed once again at sundown so that they can help insulate).

Reorganize your rooms. Relocate your furnishings so that you're seated close to interior walls – external wall surfaces and older windows will tend to be drafty. Do not sit in the draft.

Ensure that it stays closed. Conventional fire places can be an energy loser – it is best not to ever rely on them since they draw hot air out of the home and up the chimney. When not being used, make certain the damper is shut. Before shutting the damper, ensure that you do not have smoldering embers. Should you opt to not make use of a fireplace, then block off the masonry with a bit of stiff insulating material from the hardware store that fits nicely into the space (dampers do not close completely without some leaking).

Get rid of squandered energy. Switch off lighting fixtures in unoccupied rooms. Disconnect that extra fridge in your garage if you do not really need it – this relatively practical way to keep extra beverages cool contributes 10 to 25 percent to your electricity bill. Switch off kitchen and bath-ventilating fans after they have completed their job – these fans can blow out a house-full of hot air when unintentionally left on. Keep the fireplace damper closed unless of course a fire is burning to prevent as much as 8% of your furnace-heated air from going out the chimney.

Abridge showers. Merely decreasing that lingering time by a couple of minutes can help to save hundreds upon hundreds of gallons of hot water every month for a household of 4 people. Showers make up two thirds of your water heating expenses. Slicing your showers by 50 percent will lower your water heating spending by 33%.

repair appliances iowa des moinesUse appliances efficiently. Do exclusively full loads when using your dishwashing machine and clothes washer. Make use of the cold water setting on your clothes washer whenever you are able. Using cold water lowers your washer’s energy consumption by seventy-five percent. Make sure to clean your clothes dryer’s lint trap after each and every usage. Use the moisture-sensing automated drying setting on your clothes dryer if you happen to have one.

Put your pc and monitor to sleep. Many computers start out with the power management features switched off. Whenever you are finished with your computer, power it down. Never let it sit in sleep mode overnight since it is still pulling a bit of power.

Plug “leaking energy” in electronic devices. New televisions, chargers, computer peripheral devices, and other electronics use electricity even though they're turned off. Though these “standby losses” are just a couple of watts each, they soon add up to over 50 watts in an average home that's consumed continuously. If at all possible, disconnect electronics and chargers which have a block-shaped transformer on the plug when they're not being used. For computer scanners, printers, and other devices which are connected to a power strip, merely turn off the power strip after turning off your PC
.

IS YOUR FURNACE NOT KEEPING UP?

During extreme temps like we are experiencing right now (-17 is crazy cold!) it is not unusual for our furnaces to struggle to keep our homes as toasty warm as we are accustom to. Your furnace is working hard to keep up with the demand. If your home is older and/or lacking proper insulation, this will make it even more challenging.

If you have babies or elderly family members in your home, and you are concerned about them not keeping warm enough, consider the following:

1. Turn on your oven for a little while, and open the door to allow heat to warm up the room.

2. Pick up a cheap space heater at the department store to help keep a bedroom warm, or to warm up a bathroom during bathing time.

3. Keep the curtains drawn at night to help keep cold air from drafting in from older windows.

4. Place a rolled up towel on the floor along the inside of your front and back doors to help keep the cold air from creeping in.

5. Keep crawling babies dressed in warm footie PJ’s layered with socks and t-shirt underneath. The air on the floor is always colder and drafty. If they will wear a skull cap, that would be even better. And, of course, be sure to keep them away from space heaters and ovens with open doors!

Hang in there, it’s suppose to warm up to the 30’s by Friday! But, if you think there is something wrong with your furnace, give a call and we'll send a tech out to take care of it.
