How Does Hot Weather Affect Air Conditioners?

greens appliance heating and coolingHow does hot weather affect air conditioners and central air systems anyhow? Severe hot weather does, in fact, take its toll on air conditioning systems, making it a challenge to keep homes cool, often times causing units to break down. Two tips to help you avoid an expensive (and sometimes unnecessary) repair bill.

1. Make sure to replace your furnace filter each month with a clean one. A dirty filter causes your unit to work harder. When the heat index is high, your unit will have to work very hard and a dirty filter will compound the matter. This is actually the number one cause of premature failure! Use a good quality pleated filter for maximum efficiency.

2. If your unit has not had its annual maintenance, get it down now! Each year your unit should have a seasonal maintenance performed by a licensed heating and cooling technician. This should be a full comprehensive inspection done by a professional who will clean and inspect all the operations thoroughly, in addition to checking and adjusting all the pressures. Make sure your unit is properly serviced each spring/summer to ensure it is running at its most efficient capacity.

By doing these two simple things, you will enjoy maximum comfort in your home, experience a lower utility bill, be a more environmentally friendly consumer, and, most likely never have to call a repair man.
