Does Your Refrigerator Make Noises and Sounds?

Does your refrigerator make funny sounds and strange noises? Sometimes, these noises are simply a sign your fridge is operating through its daily routine. There are quite a few moving parts - including water. You might hear some of these noises:

refridgerator dishwasherWater Dripping: Many refrigerators have a drip pan to capture melt-water during a defrost cycle. The excess melt-water runs through a tube in the back of the refrigerator and into the pan. Evaporation usually takes care of the small amount of water discharged.

Ice-Maker: Another water flow sound may come from your built-in ice maker running through its cycle. The ice-maker also may occasionally dump ice into the ice bin.

Humming: While it's natural for a fridge to hum occasionally, a humming that is either lengthy or loud may be caused by a compressor problem.

Clicking: A repetitive clicking noise will often have to do with flow of electricity. The compressor may be drawing too much current and the overload clicks on and off as it cools things down. If you're hearing repeated clicking noise from your refrigerator, it's time for a repair or part replacement. There are various parts that may cause a clicking noise and often it's one part drawing too many amps.

Chirping/Squealing: This may be due to a fan motor. If the noise is louder when you open the door, it's probably an evaporator fan.

Rattling: This could be caused by a bracket or nut that has come loose. While "it" may simply need tightening, we can help determine which "it" is making the noise.

Remember, if you do try to do anything behind your refrigerator, please unplug the appliance before touching anything. Some of the noises may be a natural part of your refrigerator's work day. However, if the noises become louder, longer, and more annoying - give us a call at 515-323-0680.
